 JL50, written and directed by Shailender Vyas, is about the titular plane that has crashed after taking off from Kolkata 35 years ago. While investigating the case, CBI officer Shantanu (Abhay Deol) gets embroiled in the details of the plane and the people who were in it. Vyas creates a moody atmosphere to ground the time travel aspects of the narrative and adds a noir-ish tone made famous by Satyajit Ray and Sharadindu Bandyopadhyay’s stories to make the movie palatable for the audience. And while it sets the stage for a ‘Dark’-esque web series with India as the backdrop, it’s a shame that it lacks depth.
